Recently, the Scala LNS50W All-in-One Liquid Nitrogen Generator project at Alaer University City, Xinjiang, China, was successfully installed, commissioned, and accepted.

Located on the northern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, Alaer University City is a key higher-education hub developed in southern Xinjiang, bringing together multiple universities and research institutions. It supports extensive research activities in fields such as biology, materials science, and chemistry, creating a strong and continuous demand for a reliable supply of liquid nitrogen.

The region experiences a typical continental climate, with winter temperatures dropping as low as -15°C (5°F) and summer temperatures reaching up to 38°C (100°F). The combination of extreme seasonal temperature variations, an extremely dry climate, and dusty desert conditions presents demanding requirements for the reliability and stability of laboratory equipment.

Overcoming Challenging Installation Conditions

For this project, the equipment was installed in a laboratory on the fifth floor of a teaching building, where the site presented a number of significant logistical challenges.

The laboratory had limited indoor space and an entrance threshold, while local logistics infrastructure was relatively limited, meaning that unloading and handling of large equipment had to be carried out largely by manual labor.

Thanks to the compact and integrated design of the LNS50W, the equipment was successfully transported through the building's elevator, across the entrance threshold, and into the confined laboratory space. The project team overcame a series of challenges involving transportation, lifting, positioning, and installation, ultimately completing commissioning and putting the system into operation successfully.

Split Chiller Design for Improved Indoor Operating Conditions

The LNS50W All-in-One Liquid Nitrogen Generator is equipped with a GM cryocooler. For this project, Scala adopted a split-type water chiller configuration, with the main chiller unit installed externally.

By moving the chiller outside the laboratory, the solution effectively addresses common challenges associated with conventional integrated systems, including indoor noise and insufficient heat dissipation.

The split chiller configuration is also well suited to the extreme temperature variations experienced in desert environments. No antifreeze solution is required, significantly reducing maintenance requirements and simplifying long-term operation.

The core cryocooler and air compressor are designed for a continuous operating life of up to 15,000 hours, providing reliable liquid nitrogen production for long-term laboratory research.

Flexible Capacity Expansion Protects Future Investment

Another key advantage of the LNS50W is its capacity expansion capability.

As the laboratory's liquid nitrogen demand increases in the future, the system can be upgraded simply by replacing the cryocooler with a higher-capacity cold head. This makes it possible to increase liquid nitrogen production without replacing the entire system.

This upgrade flexibility helps laboratories adapt to growing demand while protecting their existing equipment investment and research budgets.

Reliable Liquid Nitrogen Supply for Challenging Research Environments

Scala's LNS Series All-in-One Liquid Nitrogen Generators, based on proven GM cryocooler technology, combine a high level of system integration with flexible upgrade options. They are designed to meet the liquid nitrogen supply requirements of university laboratories, research institutes, and other scientific research facilities.

The successful deployment of the LNS50W at Alaer University City demonstrates the system's ability to operate reliably under challenging conditions, including extreme seasonal temperature variations, dry and dusty desert environments, and space-constrained installation sites.

The project provides a stable and reliable liquid nitrogen supply for scientific research in southern Xinjiang and further demonstrates Scala's capability to deliver practical cryogenic solutions for demanding laboratory environments.
